The ash on the arm trick has got to be one of the first “cool” tricks we learn to do as magicians. When performing it you’ve got a half dozen different ways to get the revelation to appear on your arm, and at some point in time there was even an Ash Pen on the market that you could use to draw the revelation on your arm with. However method you used they all made the revelation to look hand written. Phoenix Ashes changes that. With Phoenix Ashes the revelation is a crystal clear precision drawn copy of the half card burned in the process of performing the trick. Frankly, as a revelation, it’s beautiful.

The DVD comes with two precision gimmicks and a stamp pad. You’ll have to prepare the stamp pad yourself for use, and the DVD will explain how to do that. The gimmicks are made from a sturdy material and will last a long time. You have the option of doing two different card reveals with the gimmicks provided.

Preparing the effect to be performed can take place in a matter of seconds and the prep materials can fit nicely into your jacket or pants pocket. So long as you can solve the problem of having to constantly wipe the ash off your arm, you could in theory perform this in a walk around setting. I recently did this in a walk around setting for an event I was working and I just carried baby wipes in my close up case. A minute between set and setup was all I needed to prep an arm and clean the other. There wasn’t a jaw in the place that wasn’t on the ground by the time I was done with them. Of all the effects I performed that night this was the crowd favorite.

The DVD has two performances on it followed by the explanation section and then the final thoughts and common mistakes portion. Each performance video features a different card reveal. The tutorial is pretty short and easy to follow, and the common mistakes section really helps give you some extra things to consider so you can get the most out of your Phoenix Ashes. The DVD is in Spanish with an English dub, but the dub is easy to follow along with and being someone who loves watching Anime I’m not really bothered much by watching a dubbed video.

Phoenix Ashes is not only a fun effect to perform, but it’s visual enough to work in close up or in parlor settings. I think a large stage might be pushing it a bit much, but make no mistake you’ll certainly get a lot of use out of it. The only drawback is that Phoenix Ashes reveals only two playing cards. For anyone that uses Ash on Arm to reveal Zener symbols, names, or simple pictures you may find that the playing card reveals maybe too limiting for you. But if you don’t mind the playing card reveals then this is a must have effect! It’s one that you’ll use over and over. I wouldn’t be surprised if this goes into your close up case and never leaves. I can’t recommend Phoenix Ashes enough.

When I give my product scores below I am measuring them on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 Being absolute the worst score possible, and 10 being the absolute best, making a score of five average. The four points that I grade upon is Product Quality, Teaching Quality, Sound & Video Quality and Overall Quality.

Great price for a great effect.

Teaching Quality: 8
